One of my most vivid memories of my mama is her standing at the stove making playdough.
I know I’ve told you guys before, but she taught preschool for more than 20 years, and she used to make playdough for every single student and bring it to his or her house during the summertime. She dedicatedly cooked a fresh batch the night before, packaged it up, drove to each kiddo’s home, and gave him or her a little playdough-gift to ease their fears about school before they stepped into her classroom. She also made it every week for her class…just to have around.
She was pretty neat.
Not unlike homemade playdough. Pretty neat. You can add glitter, sprinkles, colors, rocks…whatever your little heart desires.
Homemade Playdough
PRINT Recipe
- 1 C flour
- ½ C salt
- 2 t cream of tartar
- 1 T oil
- 1 C water
- Food Coloring (or add-ins like glitter/sprinkles/plastic toys)
Combine all the ingredients except for the food coloring in a large pot over medium/high heat. Stir, stir, stir…and stir until your arm feels like it may fall off and the mixture comes together and looks doughy.
Turn out onto the counter or a cutting board, let cool for a few moments and knead until smooth. Add a few drops of food coloring and knead until incorporated. (You can also add the food coloring while it’s in the pot, and stir it in if you don’t want your hands to get all colorful)
Store in an airtight container or a Ziploc bag at room temperature.

Your Mama definitely sounds like a very very special lady…. My little one is scared (!) of play dough at the moment, he doesn’t like the squishing! While he comes around to it, I have fun playing 😉

It sounds like your mom was one special lady, and she passed that special-ness straight on to you. Your little girl is going to have the best childhood memories!
We used to make homemade playdough when I was a kiddo too, although we never thought to add sprinkles or glitter. I’ll have to remember this when it’s my turn to be mom 🙂

Ahahaha I love the picture of the cellphone and rocks stuck in the play dough. My mom used to make us homemade play dough all the time! I distinctly remember standing by her side watching her make it. I love that baby A will have that memory too 🙂

I vaguely remember making homemade playdough. I am suprised Baby A didn’t eat it! I also really enjoy all the loving memories of your mama. It is really neat getting to see what a wonderful person she was.

Hahaha, rocks and a cell phone in the playdough. 2 other things: love the zebra stripe blanket, and LOVE the playdough with sprinkles!
A little boy in my class last year picked out that zebra pattern and had his mom make Baby A a blanket…it’s priceless!
Oh this is so fun! When I was little, my mum and I would make playdough – but we had to stop when my sister got old enough to play too and she would EAT as much as she possibly could. Don’t ask me why or how she did this, but she continued doing it til she was about 6?!
yea for homemade playdoh!! i have a 5 year old and a 16 month old and i have been looking for stuff to entertain on the very hot summer days in texas. this will definitely be put to use!

My mom used to make us play dough as a kid – it was awesome! She would make it for her students but always made sure to make a little extra for us too. 🙂
I was the most popular babysitter in our church when I was a pre-teen, so you can imagine how many little ones I spent time with. I used to make homemade playdough for them too! Which might have been part of why I was so popular 🙂
This brings back so many memories. I need to make this for some friend’s kiddos! If they enjoy it half as much as baby A I will call it a success.
